Planning the perfect day for your family in a tropical paradise can be overwhelming. You want a mix of adventure, relaxation, and great food without spending hours in the car. Luckily, Dorado offers the perfect balance of local charm, historic landmarks, and pristine coastlines.

Whether you are traveling with toddlers or teenagers, here is the ultimate step-by-step itinerary for an unforgettable family day in Dorado, Puerto Rico.

Morning: Explore the Mystery of El Ojo del Buey

Start your morning around 9:00 AM before the Caribbean sun gets too hot. Head straight to El Ojo del Buey (The Ox Eye), a famous natural rock formation located right where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic Ocean.

The area features a beautiful, scenic coastal walkway shaded by palm trees. According to local legend, the famous Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí buried his treasure right along this coastline! Kids will love hunting for "pirate treasure" while parents enjoy the dramatic ocean views.

      • Local Tip: The currents here are very strong, so this stop is purely for sightseeing, hiking, and taking incredible family photos. Save the swimming for our afternoon stop!

Lunch: Seaside open air restaurant, steps from El Ojo del Buey

After working up an appetite, you don't need to go far for lunch. Skip the fast-food chains and introduce your family to refined Puerto Rican cuisine.

For an incredible family sit-down meal, with a beautiful seaside view head over to the The Kikita Beach House. Located right next to the entrance of

El Ojo del Buey, you are able to walk over after your hike and exploration.

Local Tip: It maybe a good idea to make a reservation online in advance
Local Tip: We have enjoyed everything we have tried there, but if you are very hungry, try the complete stuffed Lobster.

Afternoon: Splash Safely at Playa Dorado Del Mar Beach

No family vacation to Puerto Rico is complete without a dedicated beach afternoon. After lunch, pack up the kids and head to

Playa Dorado Del Mar Beach

This is the ultimate family beach in Dorado. Located inside the Dorado Del Mar community, this is the is our favorite beach with our girls. There is an outer reef that blocks even large swells, and a seagrass bed that acts as refuge for fish. There are trees for shade and our kids love climbing them. You can explore the tide pools at the point, swim out to the red/gold/green buoy, or just post up in the shade and watch your children play. There is less sand at this beach than some others, but during the week you can easily claim your spot in paradise.

Traveler Hack: If you are staying with us at Family Travel, do not worry about packing heavy beach gear. We provide complimentary beach chairs, beach toys, and towels so your family can walk straight from the car to the sand with zero stress.

Alternative Option: If not staying in Dorado Del Mar: Balneario Manuel Nolo Morales (also known as Dorado Sardinera Beach).

An offshore reef naturally breaks the big waves, creating a calm, shallow, swimming-pool-like environment that is perfectly safe for toddlers and young children to splash around in. There are public restrooms, showers, and plenty of shade trees to keep your family comfortable all afternoon.

Evening: Wind Down at Your Private Oasis

After a full day of salt water and sunshine, the best part of a family vacation is having a spacious, comfortable home base to return to. Skip the crowded hotel lobbies and head back to relax in absolute privacy.

At Villa Coral in Dorado, Puerto Rico, you can rinse off the sand in a luxury shower, fire up our complete outdoor kitchen, or let the kids play in their custom detached castle playroom while you enjoy a sunset drink by the private saltwater pool.
